How to decide, when you still love him
Love was never the variable. That is why every list of signs leaves you exactly where you were.
Elena Hart · 9 minutes
You have taken the quiz. Possibly several. You scored somewhere in the middle, as almost everyone does, and the result told you to communicate more and consider counselling. You closed the tab knowing precisely as much as you knew before.
The quizzes fail you for a specific reason. They are built to detect whether a relationship is bad, and yours is not straightforwardly bad. It is good on Sunday mornings and wrong in a way you cannot fit into a multiple choice. Meanwhile you still love him, so every list of signs it is time to leave reads like it was written about someone else's man.
Love was never the variable
Here is the thing nobody says early enough. Whether you love him is not the question the decision turns on, and it never was. You can love someone accurately, with your eyes open, and still be unable to build a life with them.
This is why you are stuck. You have been trying to answer a question about the future using a measurement of your feeling, and your feeling is not evidence about the future. It is evidence that the attachment is real. Nobody was disputing that.
The question is not whether you love him. It is what staying costs, whether that cost is still moving, and whether you can pay it for ten years.
The three things that actually settle it
- 01What does staying cost, specifically?
- Not in feelings — in named things. The children you will not have if this timeline holds. The city you will not move to. The version of your work that stays small. The friendships already thinner. Write the list and read it as a bill rather than a grievance, because that is what it is.
- 02Is the cost still moving?
- Compare the bill to the one you would have written two years ago. If the list is shorter, something real is happening and it deserves time. If it is the same list with more items, you are not waiting for a change; you are watching a trend and calling it hope.
- 03Can you pay it for ten years?
- Not can you survive it, and not is it worse than being alone. Take today's arrangement — this exact version of him, not the improved one — and run it forward a decade. If ten years of precisely this is unbearable, you have your answer, and no further evidence is coming.
Notice what these three do not ask. They do not ask whether he is a good man, whether anyone is at fault, or whether you have tried hard enough. Those questions are interesting and they are not decisive, which is why they can occupy you for years without resolving.
Why you keep waiting for certainty
You are waiting to feel sure. It is worth knowing that the feeling you are waiting for is not on its way. Certainty is not what precedes a decision like this one; it is something a few people assemble afterwards, and plenty never do.
So the threshold has to be something you can actually reach. Not certainty, but this: have you run out of new information? If nothing you learn in the next six months would change the arithmetic, then waiting is not gathering evidence. It is only paying the bill for longer while you hope the decision makes itself.
There is one honest exception, and it needs a shape. If you have asked for one specific change, and he knows it is decisive, and there is a date on it — that is a real reason to wait. What is not a reason is a general hope that he will grow into it. Waiting without a date is not patience.
Staying is also a decision
Everything about this subject is written as though only leaving counts as an outcome. That is a distortion, and it makes women who stay feel like women who failed to act.
You can look squarely at the bill, decide the relationship is worth it, and choose it deliberately. That is a decision with dignity in it, and it is available to you. It differs from what you have been doing in one respect: you would know what you are paying and have agreed to pay it, rather than absorbing it and wondering nightly why you feel diminished.
Chosen and endured look identical from outside the house. They do not feel remotely alike from inside it.
The reason the framework is not enough
You could read all three questions tonight, answer them accurately, and still not move. That happens constantly, and it is not weakness of will.
It happens because a decision has to be made from somewhere. Made from fear, you will choose whatever is least frightening this month, which is usually staying, and you will call it love. Made from self-respect, you will choose what the bill and the ten years honestly support, and either answer becomes possible.
Which is the whole argument of the book underneath these essays, and the reason it refuses to start with him. Work out what you are worth and what you actually need, and the question about him stops being unanswerable. It becomes the second question, which is the only place it was ever going to be answerable from.
